What I do every day... I start my day by speed-reading one morning newspaper (and another two in the evening). I am a former journalist, so this is more pleasure than work. The rest of my day is even easier: checking other people's work and dreaming up new ideas. So why I suffer so horribly from stress, is surely a matter of genetics. I find that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the best antidotes.

And about me... I suppose I am a bit of a bigot. I cannot stand people who smoke in public buildings (what they do in non-public places is their business). To my wife's horror, I would walk up to a smoker in a restaurant and compare his/her action to urinating in a swimming pool. Hence Rode House is a smoke-free zone, and we only appoint non-smokers. Apart from property research, my great loves are classical music, languages and a little dose of history. The latter two I took as subjects during my BA degree at the University of Stellenbosch, when I was still a young man. Funny thing is, three of the four passions I got from my parents: history and languages from my dad (who spoke fluent German, Afrikaans and English) and music from my poor mother, who had the misfortune of trying to teach me the piano. My wife, Linda, shares my interest in classical music and languages. She is a freelance book editor. My interest in business only developed late, and resulted in my taking an MBA, also at the University of Stellenbosch.
