Rode 2008 events to address challenges facing the property market

Monday, July 14, 2008

A number of events have been organised by Rode & Associates to take place countrywide during the month of August, and which will address the many challenges currently facing the property market.

One-Day Rode Conferences (Cape Town and Johannesburg)

The annual one-day Rode Conferences will be held in both Cape Town (Monday 11 August at the Spier Estate near Stellenbosch) and Johannesburg (Thursday 14 August at the Southern Sun Grayston, Sandton). Both events are sponsored by FNB Commercial Property Finance.

The conferences will kick off with Chief Economist of First National Bank, Dr Cees Bruggemans in Cape Town and Mike Schüssler, Chief Economist with T-Sec in Sandton. Both speakers will address the topic “Challenges facing the economy 2008-2009”.

At both venues, this topic will be followed by Dries du Toit’s presentation on “Property: the Fourth Asset”. Du Doit is an independent investment consultant with his own company, Dries du Toit Consult CC, who spent a number of years with Sanlam where he became the company’s chief investment strategist before going independent. London-based Scott Picken, MD of International Property Solutions (IPS), will advise participants on “Where in the world to invest offshore? And why?” This will be followed by a presentation by the Chief Executive of the Pam Golding International Property Group, Dr Andrew Golding, who will address the issue: “What on earth is happening in the residential market?”

Martin Venter, CEO of Elements Development Projects (Pty) Ltd will talk on “Global property investment – beyond the credit crisis”. In Cape Town this will be followed by a presentation entitled “Is affordable housing still viable?” to be delivered by Hennie Botes, CEO of Moladi Construction Systems, while at the Sandton conference, Des Hughes, MD of Basil Read Developments will talk on “Cosmo City: lessons we have learnt”.

Both one-day conferences will conclude with Erwin Rode addressing the energy crisis currently gripping the country in a talk entitled “Prospects for property after Eskom”.

Professor Charles Martin, senior economist at the Bureau of Economic Research (BER) at the University of Stellenbosch, will be acting as master of ceremonies at both the Cape Town and Johannesburg conferences.

Breakfast Events: Durban, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria

Three breakfast events have also been scheduled. Two of these, both sponsored by FNB Commercial Property Finance, will be held in Durban on Monday 25 August (at the Protea Hotel Edward, Marine Parade) and in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday 26 August (at the Protea Hotel Marine on Beach Road).

As with the one-day conferences, these breakfast events will begin with a presentation on “Challenges facing the economy 2009-2009” presented in Durban by Mike Schüssler, and in Port Elizabeth by Dr Cees Bruggemans. These will be followed by Erwin Rode’s talk “Prospects for property after Eskom”.

The Pretoria event, sponsored by Sake24, will be held on Wednesday, 13 August, at the Shelanti Tea Garden on Jean Avenue in Centurion. Erwin Rode will present a talk entitled “Vooruitsigte vir die eiendomsmark”.
