First-rate line-up of speakers to address the many uncertainties and opportunities facing the property industry at upcoming Rode events

Property economists Rode & Associates’ annual events are to be held in August this year in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Durban.

The central theme of these events will be “A SWOT analysis of the economy and the property market”.

The conference events are sponsored by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) Properties.


Cape Town

The one-day Rode Conference at Spier Estate, near Stellenbosch, will take place on Tuesday, 20 August.

The event will start with a presentation by Rudolf Gouws, a consultant economist to Rand Merchant Bank and also a member of its board. His topic of discussion will be “Economic prospects”. Rudolf is also an honorary professor of economics at the University of Stellenbosch.

This will be followed by a presentation entitled “It makes no sense to confine your investments to SA” to be delivered by Mike Smuts, who is the MD of Smuts & Taylor.

Next, Neale Petersen, CEO & Publisher of REALE MEDIA, will talk about the advent of the modern property investor. Neal's publication, SA Real Estate Investor Magazine, won the SAPOA Property Journalism Award for the best property printed publication in 2013.

Kura Chihota, CEO of Ascendant Property Fund, an unlisted Zimbabwean property fund, will be discussing the opportunities available in the Zimbabwe property market.

Kura Chihota's talk will be followed by Derek Bock’s presentation, “The importance of saving the Voortrekker Road Corridor and how we are doing it”. Derek is the CEO of the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID).

Martin Goodman, who is a director of Rentshield, will share his thoughts on residential letting in SA – "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".

Thereafter, Karly Spronk, sustainability consultant at WSP GREEN by DESIGN, will talk on "The [financial] beauty of addressing the sustainability imperative".

The Cape Town conference will conclude with property economist Erwin Rode’s presentation entitled “State of the property market, including letting vs. buying”.

Johannesburg

The annual one-day Rode Conference in Johannesburg will be held on Friday, 23 August, at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park.

The event will start with a presentation by the Chief Economist at First National Bank, Sizwe Nxedlana, who will share his insights on “Economic prospects”.

As with the Cape Town conference, Mike Smuts, MD of Smuts & Taylor and Neale Petersen, CEO & Publisher of REALE MEDIA, will again discuss topics such as not confining one's investments to SA and the advent of the modern property investor.

Shawn Morvotjoe, Associate Director, Business Development of BMI Appraisals Ltd, based in Hong Kong, will bring an Asian perspective to this year’s conference. He will be discussing the Asia property market trend.

The opportunities in the Zimbabwe property market will again be covered by Kura Chihota, CEO of Ascendant Property Fund, an unlisted Zimbabwean property fund.

Next, Martin Goodman, director of Rentshield, will again talk on residential letting in SA – "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", followed by Karly Spronk, sustainability consultant at WSP GREEN by DESIGN, who will again talk on "The [financial] beauty of addressing the sustainability imperative".

The Johannesburg conference will conclude with property economist and professional valuer Erwin Rode’s presentation entitled “State of the property market, including letting vs. buying”.

Kura Chihota, CEO of Ascendant Property Fund, an unlisted Zimbabwean property fund, will be the master of ceremonies at both the Cape Town and Johannesburg conferences.

Port Elizabeth

The breakfast event in Port Elizabeth will be held on Thursday, 22 August, at the Protea Hotel Marine in Port Elizabeth. Dr Cees Bruggemans, consulting economist to First National Bank, will present a talk entitled “Economic prospects”.  Erwin Rode will close with his presentation entitled “State of the property market, including letting vs. buying”.

Bloemfontein

The breakfast event in Bloemfontein will be held on Wednesday, 28 August, at Ilanga Estate in Bloemfontein. Dawie Roodt, Director/Chief Economist at Efficient Group, will present a talk entitled “A Giant Leap in an uncertain world”. Erwin Rode will close with his presentation entitled “State of the property market, including letting vs. buying”.

Durban

The breakfast event in Durban will be held on Friday, 30 August, at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga Rocks. Dennis Dykes, Group Chief Economist at Nedbank Ltd, will start the event with a talk entitled “Economic prospects”. Erwin Rode will close with his presentation entitled “State of the property market, including letting vs. buying”.
